GREAT DANES

AND FRIENDS, Inc.

Great Danes and Friends, Inc is a 501c3 (tax ID# 81-3075583) animal rescue located in Los Angeles, CA, specializing in Great Danes and large and giant breed senior canines that are primarily sanctuary animals due to medical or behavioral issues. We also previously established and currently work within coalitions of Dane rescuers and all breed senior animal rescuers to assist those rescue partners with coordinating rescue and transport logistics for animals pulled from shelters as well as for those animals turned in to us by their owners. Additionally, we actively work in shelter reform and are a voice for animal rights.

Our  Goal

Our primary purpose is saving as many lives as we can with a strong emphasis on the quality of those lives once the animals are rescued. Our focus at the sanctuary is senior dogs that are hospice cases or otherwise, mostly unadoptable usually due to chronic and sometimes multiple medical issues that are unable to be healed.  The rescue is located in a personal residence within the City of Los Angeles and as such, is restricted to having 3 dogs at any one time onsite.  Our dogs live freely in a pack as we do not use kennels, crates or boarding other than when medically necessary such as post-op after medical procedures.  We do use baby gates to segregate incoming animals from the pack for their initial 2 week quarantine period.  Those animals live in the den and have access to the front yard during quarantine.  After quarantine, they join the rest of the pack and have full access to the entire home and yards.  Our long-term goal is to build or purchase a facility that permits us to have more than 3 dogs but that provides a home-like environment for these dogs to thrive in and enjoy the remainder of their lives.

The sanctuary dogs receive medical care – often specialized, as well as specialized food, exercise and unlimited love with physical affection.  They live inside the home having 24/7 access to the outside yards which are lush and fully fenced with 5 - 8 foot tall fences lined with taller shrubbery.  There are plenty of doggy beds throughout the home but they also have a large sectional sofa in the den they enjoy sleeping on and they love to crawl onto my bed as well. These dogs have doggy friends and many people friends alike. In short, these dogs have the typical lives you would expect if they were living in a home with any family.  They are safe and secure for the rest of their lives, happy and know they are home.

Approximately 99% of the animals we rescue come directly from kill shelters in the So CA area.  We have an extensive list of shelters we pull animals from ranging from north of San Francisco, south to Mexico, east to Coachella and back up north to Las Vegas, and everything in between.  This is our local rescue area; we have also worked nationwide occasionally since 2013, as the situation necessitates and are partnered with several out of state shelters and rescues.

We have rescue partners located on the West Coast and also have rescue partners located in AZ, NV, CO, TX, WI, MN, and OH.  Many of those also take younger Great Danes and other giant breeds of all ages which we help them secure from CA.

We welcome new 501c3 rescue partners who are interested in rescuing animals from So CA and invite your inquiry into our programs. Please join us in this endeavor!
